Advent Unbound

This Advent I’ll be stepping back and taking a holistic look at the season through the writings of Luke and Paul. Is Advent simply wreaths and candles and nativity scenes and pageants where we retell the same story, seemingly only for children? Is there anything more? Does Advent have the power to say anything into this crazy time and divisive space? Of course the answer is a resounding Yes. The image I have is not of a bookish exercise done in small, quiet rooms in hushed tones, but rather a roaring of the Holy Spirit and David dancing wildly before the Lord. It’s the explosive, life-changing, Malachi refiner’s fire, and yes, profoundly joyful Psalm 150 kind of Advent that might just be lurking in the writings of Luke and Paul. Like how I feel after a spectacular kettlebell session: well-worked, cleansed, renewed. That’s what I need after a year like this. Maybe it’s what you need, too. Here’s the program, four blog posts:

  1. God’s Advent – God’s radical openness
  2. Our Advent – Our baptisms
  3. God’s Advent – An imperial upheaval
  4. Our Advent – Christmas every day
